The new WAX220 wireless access point offers high speeds thanks to Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 standards that ... [+] use a broader channel width of 160MHz.

Networking giant Netgear has stepped up in its bid to gain even more of a market share in the rapidly growing sector that falls between consumer and enterprise networking. Today the company announced the Netgear WAX220 Wi-Fi 6 Access Point. This dual-band device offers solid performance at a budget price and is part of Netgear’s Business Essentials line of access points.

Aimed primarily at small businesses, the WAX220 can deliver up to 4.2Gbps of total Wi-Fi throughput and includes a 2.5 Gbps Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) port so the access point can be sited even in areas where there’s no electricity supply.

Compatible with the latest Wi-Fi 6 smartphones, network-connected devices and laptops, the WAX220 uses Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 technology which uses a broader channel on the 5GHz band to deliver 100% more throughput than the previous generation of Wi-Fi 6. Compared to Wi-Fi 5 access points, the WAX220 supports four times the number of client devices, offering better speeds and less congestion at the endpoint.

The WAX220 has a smart industrial design and a front panel with status LEDs.

Doug Cheung is the director of Product Line Management, SMB Wireless at Netgear. He says: “There are more than 30 million small businesses in the USA and they all need good Wi-Fi for their work and for their customers. Many are looking for cost-effective, easy-to-install, yet high-performing Wi-Fi solutions to power their business operations. The WAX220 provides up to 4.2Gbps throughput and each unit covers more than 2000 square feet. It’s the fastest access point with the largest coverage area for under $200.”

Setting up the WAX220 takes approximately 10 minutes, making it ideal for any small business looking for better WIFI without fuss. Small businesses that rely on a single router for Internet access may have no wireless capability or, at best, minimal wireless coverage.

The WAX220 can be connected to almost any router using an Ethernet cable and a standard 12V power adapter. Alternatively, the WAX220 can be connected via an Ethernet cable to a Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) switch behind the router, providing greater location flexibility and delivering power and data over a single cable connection.

The Netgear WAX220 can be ceiling or wall mounted plus it has the option of being powered over ... [+] Ethernet.

Businesses can add multiple WAX220 units to extend their network over a wider area as a mesh system using the same network settings and password. Alternatively, they can cover separate areas of the business with multiple independent Wi-Fi networks using unique SSIDs with individual passwords.

The WAX220 is compact and incorporates the latest wireless technologies in a pleasing industrial design. Netgear claims it is an ideal solution for many business owners who want an easy-to-set-up Wi-Fi solution at a sensible price.

Pricing & Availability: The Netgear WAX220 is available now and costs $199.99.
